St. Vincent's Institute is using 13text to Help Children with
Diabetes

13text : The number that's giving hope to kids with
diabetes
Four times a day 8-year old Lila she has to prick the
end of her finger to check her blood sugar levels (too
much or to little blood sugar is life threatening for
her). What’s more, Lila has to be injected with insulin
before each meal.
Lila has type 1 diabetes, a disease that stops the
production of insulin and its control of blood sugar
levels.
Today, five more people will be diagnosed with
type 1 diabetes. Alarmingly, incidence is
increasing among young children like Lila.
These children are at greater risk of developing
complications as adults like kidney disease, eye
disease, nerve damage and heart disease. At St Vincent’s
Institute (SVI), scientists are working to find ways
to help kids like Lila by finding new treatments and
ways to stop the development of diabetes.
On 9th August at the MCG,
Collingwood and St Kilda will play in the Discovery Day
match.
SVI
Discovery Day is all about raising awareness and
funds for research into type 1 diabetes and giving hope
to sufferers everywhere.
